MPOS empowers youth all over BARMM region
Cotabato City, October 6, 2021 — The Ministry of Public Order and Safety conducted the 2nd Bangsamoro Peace Promotion Fellowship at Precious Cabana Ynna Beach Resort, Datu Odin Sinsuat Maguindanao, from September 29 to October 1, 2021. 32 youth leaders participated in the peace fellowship and proposed peace promotion project to be implemented in their respective communities.
The selected youth leaders are coming from the identified remote, vulnerable, and conflict-affected communities in the BARMM region – Sulu, Basilan, Lanao Del Sur, Maguindanao, Special Geographic Area, and Cotabato City.
According to the Director General of MPOS, Atty. Al-Rashid L. Balt, providing space for the youth to actively participate in peace-building initiatives also aimed at actualizing the mandates of the ministry as an institution of peace-building, reconciliation, and unification.
“We want to help in educating and promoting peace to the youths by providing conducive and effective learning materials and facilities to the madrasah in our community,” said Fadwa Mohammad, a participant from Basilan, during the presentation of their peace promotion project. The Ministry of Public Order and Safety awarded a cash grant of Php20, 000 each participating province.
Resource persons from the field of peacebuilding were also invited to contribute and share their fields of expertise. Mr. Nery Ronatay, Program Analyst in UN Women Philippines on the topic Fundamentals of Conflict, Violence, and Peace; Dr. Tirmizy Abdullah of Institute for Peace and Development in Mindanao State University, Marawi City on the topic History of Peacebuilding in Islam; Mr, Guiamel Alim, Chairperson of Consortium of Bangsamoro Civil Societies, Inc, on Tools for Making Peace Work: Dialogue, Mediation, Negotiation, and Facilitation; Dr. Jovar Pantao of Institute for Peace and Development in Mindanao State University, General Santos City on Conflict Analysis and Culture of Peace, Sittie Janine Gamao, Peace Program Officer of MPOS on Advocacy Setting.
Bangsamoro Peace Promotion Fellowship is one of the Ministry’s efforts to contribute in sustaining the region’s journey to peace. It aims to gain perspectives of participating youth on the recurring and emerging peace and security situations in their areas; train them on peacebuilding; support their feasible peacebuilding initiatives; and produce network of peace advocates in the remote, vulnerable, and conflict-affected communities in the region.
Since its first batch in 2020, BPPF has grown to become a network of more than 85 youth leaders and counting all over BARMM region.
