Butig, Lanao del Sur| The Ministry of Public Order and Safety (MPOS)-BARMM through its Special Development Fund (SDF) Support for the Rehabilitation of Butig Program provided livelihood assistance to the PINDIG Agro-Fisheries Cooperative, one of the community organizations organized by the Ministry. This is to uplift community participation, promote peacebuilding, and facilitate sustainable livelihood.
The Ministry extended livelihood assistance, and organized series of capacity development skills training for the cooperative members to establish aqua-culture based livelihood in Lake Butig, Lanao del Sur, specifically tilapia growing. The said livelihood is made possible with the partnership and support of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Agrarian Reform (MAFAR) through its Lanao del Sur Office. MAFAR extensively provided technical assistance during the series of skills training such as crafting of fish cages and its monitoring. They were able to provide fish nets, delivered tilapia fingerlings, facilitated the livelihood improvement, and donated fish feeds. Upon monitoring of MAFAR, if the necessary conditions are met, it is expected that the harvesting of the first batch of tilapia will be on July, 2024.
The aqua-culture livelihood in collaboration and partnership with the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Butig, and BLGU of Pindolonan is a significant pilot model in Lake Butig in the development of Butig, Lanao del Sur. This is in consonance to the inclination of LGU Butig to develop and promote the municipality as agro-eco tourism destination in Lanao del Sur, in so gradually transforming the image of Butig from conflict-affected community into agro-eco tourism destination, “Terrorism to Tourism” as they aspired.
The implementation of SDF program is in reference to Article XIV, Section 2, of the Bangsamoro Organic Law to rebuild, rehabilitate, and develop conflict-affected communities. This program is part of the unwavering commitment of the Bangsamoro Government in rebuilding and rehabilitating conflict-affected communities to be a developed and progressive Bangsamoro community in the region.
