South Ubian, Tawi-Tawi — Ministry of Public Order and Safety BARMM traversed the surging sea to conduct a Community-Based Training on Mediation and Values Transformation for local chief executives, religious and traditional leaders on Wednesday (March 31) in South Ubian, Tawi-Tawi – an island municipality nearer to Jolo, Sulu than to Bongao, Tawi-Tawi, its capital municipality.
The Community-Based Training (CBT) on Mediation and Values Transformation aims to capacitate local mediators, religious/traditional leaders, local chief executives, youth, women and chairmen and members of peace and order committees to handle and pacify community conflict. Around thirty-two (32) participants from the Municipality of South Ubian, Tawi-Tawi attended the training at Island Inn & Restaurant, Barangay Tabawan.
DMO IV Bhenhar Ayob explained the rationale of the training as well as the mandate, duties and functions of the Ministry of Public Order and Safety (MPOS). He stressed that the training is a two-way learning process wherein MPOS is not only imparting lectures but also learning from the participants with regards to their local practices in handling community conflicts. Topics on Early Warning and Early Response, Understanding Conflict Mediation in BARMM, and Values Transformation were also delivered during the activity by the other MPOS lecturers.
Nastrim Eraham of South Ubian Municipal Local Government welcomed the MPOS team with stress-relieving remarks when he said “Ako po ay nagpapasalamat na ang MPOS ay nakarating dito [South Ubian]. Kahit ito ang pinakamalayong munisipalidad, mas malapit sa Jolo kumpara sa Bongao. Ito ang unang pagkakataon na may nakarating sa amin dito mula nang maitayo ang BARMM Government. Maraming salamat po!”
During the training-workshop, participants shared their unique traditional practices in mediating and settling conflicts in their community. According to them, practicing sab’r (patience) and the belief that relationship ties in their community is more valuable than self-interest and disputes are among the factors why conflict or rido is not prevalent in their communities. Notwithstanding that, they assured the MPOS team that the learnings from the activity will be adapted to ensure and maintain peace and order in their community.
