Province of Sulu, BARMM | The Ministry of Public Order and Safety, as part of its efforts to fulfill its functions to conduct programs, project, and activities relating to promotion of peace and sustainable development, reconciliation, unification, and peaceful co-existence; as well as to formulate and implement policies and programs for the effective settlement of family feuds (Rido) and other horizontal conflicts in the region , as well as for the prevention of the recurrence of such conflicts, conducted an activity dubbed Interventions for Local Mediators: Organizing and Capacity Development and orientation of Alternative Dispute Resolution for local mediators on 17-18 July 2021 at Notre Dame Review Center, Jolo, Sulu.
The activity was participated by more than 50 local mediators from the different municipalities of Sulu, representing different affiliations, organizations and agencies, such law enforcement agencies, government agencies, Municipal and Barangay Government Units, CSOs, MILF-BIAF, MNLF, among others. This effort of MPOS is purposed to build stronger partnership with local mediators and assist them by strengthening their organizations and equipping them with the basic knowledge and skills in negotiation, mediation, and conflict resolution, among others.
The two-day activity became an avenue for the participants to compliment their expertise and experiences on conflict resolution and rido settlement through the series of lectures, inputs and workshops designed for them. Among which are Understanding Alternative Dispute Resolution lectured by Atty. Al-Rashid L. Balt, Director-General of MPOS; Updates on Rido Settlement in the Province: Gaps, Challenges, and Milestones presented by the Deputy Provincial Director of PNP Sulu PLtCol Kris Conrad Gutierrez; Basic Skills in Mediation discussed by Ms. Rosemain T. Abduraji, Executive Director of Tumikang Sama-Sama; Basic Concepts of Organizing lectured by Sittie Janine Gamao, the Peace Program Officer IV of MPOS; and the lecture on Procedure in Registering an Organization by Atty. Abuali Abas, Attorney IV of MPOS.
The event was also graced by one of the Focal Person of ELAC and the concurrent Provincial Tourism Officer of the Provincial Government of Sulu Sir Julkiram Arastam; and by the Member of the Parliament of the Bangsamoro Transition Authority Hon. Sahi S. Udjah, wherein they have expressed their hope so to thrust peace, order and development in Sulu and the significance of the efforts like the subject activity in supporting, ensuring and acknowledging the participation of community actors to attain such.
MPOS is fully committed to further implement this humble endeavor to all provinces and special geographic area of BARMM.
