Bongao, Tawi-Tawi| The Ministry of Public Order and Safety (MPOS) with the support of the UN Women conducted a “Capacity Building for Community of Practice of Local Women Mediators of Tawi-Tawi” on April 23-25, 2024, at Rachel’s Place Hotel and Restaurant, Bongao, Tawi-Tawi.
Twenty-seven (27) women local mediators from Tawi-Tawi province participated in the training. The participants were composed of female local chief executives (LCE) from different municipalities of Tawi-Tawi province, officials and representatives from the civil society organizations namely the Association of Local Mediators in Tawi-Tawi, Inc. (ALMTA Inc.), and esteemed individuals from various sectors of the community who are engaged in conflict resolution.
“𝘏𝘪𝘯𝘥𝘪 𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘨 𝘬𝘢𝘮𝘪 𝘢𝘯𝘨 𝘮𝘢𝘬𝘢𝘬𝘢-𝘣𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘧𝘪𝘵 𝘴𝘢 𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘯𝘢 𝘪𝘵𝘰 𝘬𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘪 𝘱𝘢𝘵𝘪 𝘺𝘶𝘯𝘨 𝘬𝘰𝘮𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘥𝘢𝘥 𝘯𝘢 𝘢𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘱𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘨𝘴𝘪𝘴𝘪𝘭𝘣𝘪𝘩𝘢𝘯 𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘢 𝘮𝘢𝘱𝘢𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘮𝘢𝘢𝘺𝘰𝘴 𝘢𝘵 𝘮𝘢𝘱𝘢𝘺𝘢𝘱𝘢 𝘢𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘭𝘶𝘨𝘢𝘳 𝘢𝘵 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘣𝘪𝘯𝘴𝘺𝘢.” Barangay Chairwoman Analiza “Lesang” Sapie from Brgy. Timundon, Manuk Mangkaw, Simunul , Tawi-Tawi said during the training session.
The capacity building training for women local mediators aimed at achieving the following objectives: (1)Build a stronger partnership with local mediators through strengthening their knowledge and capacities in conflict resolution through the practice of mediation; (2)Generating critical insights to feed into the development of Bangsamoro Women Mediation Agenda.
“𝘈𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘢𝘺𝘰 𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘢 𝘮𝘢-𝘦𝘯𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘴𝘬𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘴 𝘢𝘵 𝘩𝘶𝘴𝘢𝘺 𝘴𝘢 𝘮𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯.” Tawi-Tawi Provincial Women Council Board Member Dayang Carlsum Jumaide also expressed her support for the local women mediators in the province.
The 3-day course covered various sessions which was discussed by key officials and resource persons from MPOS, UN Women, Tupo na Tao sa Laya Women (TTLAW) Mediators Organization, and Women Insider for Mindanao’n Peace and Development (WIMPAD). The training sessions include the following: “Introduction to Mediation, Negotiation, Dialogue, and Facilitation”, “Qualities and Roles of Effective Mediator”, “Ethical Conduct of Mediators: Do’s and Don’ts of Mediation”, “Conflict Analysis for Mediators: Conflict Mapping”, “Conflict Analysis for Mediators: Position, Interest, Need”, “Structuring a Mediation: Facilitative Model”, “Facilitation Techniques”, “Reflection on Mediation Exercise”, “Stories of Local Women Mediators: Experience from the Community and Practice”, and “Moving Forward: Developing Agenda of Women Mediators in BARMM.”
BWC Tawi-Tawi Commissioner Ranisa E. Salahuddin shared her insights during the session as a female leader and mediator. “𝘔𝘢𝘺 𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘬𝘢𝘳𝘢𝘬𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘢𝘵 𝘴𝘬𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘢𝘯𝘨 𝘮𝘨𝘢 𝘬𝘢𝘣𝘢𝘣𝘢𝘪𝘩𝘢𝘯 𝘱𝘢𝘨𝘥𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘴𝘢 𝘮𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘬𝘶𝘯𝘨 𝘴𝘢𝘢𝘯 𝘬𝘢𝘺𝘢 𝘯𝘪𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘨 𝘱𝘢𝘭𝘢𝘮𝘪𝘨𝘪𝘯 𝘢𝘯𝘨 𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘸𝘢𝘴𝘺𝘰𝘯,” she said.
The success of this endeavor is attributed to the strong partnership between the Ministry of Public Order and Safety and UN Women. This initiative aligns with UN Women’s joint programme, “Empowering Women for Sustainable Peace in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.” By involving women in mediation efforts, this initiative acknowledges the women local mediators’ valuable contributions to peacebuilding, encourages their leadership participation, and ultimately fostering resilient and harmonious communities in the province of Tawi-Tawi and in the Bangsamoro region.
