Every 1st of February, World Hijab Day is in recognition of Muslim women’s right and freedom to wear hijab (a veil that covers the head and other part of a female’s body). This year’s theme is “Don’t let our pride be your prejudice #EndHijabophobia.”
Hijabophobia is a term referring to discrimination against Muslims wearing Islamic veils including wearing hijab, niqab, burqa and the like. In order to promote peace and understanding among Bangsamoro people, hijab awareness campaign is significant in mitigating Hijabophobia.
This is good to note that the Philippines House of Representatives approved a bill declaring February 1 of every year as “National Hijab Day” to promote an understanding about Hijab and its innate values. The House Bill 8249 was passed on third and final reading by 203 lawmakers.
Moreover, MPOS believes that “Hijab Day” inspires the promotion of peace and identity among Bangsamoro women. It eradicates misconception, stop discrimination and it protects the freedom and practice of religion in the region. Hence, encourages appreciation and acceptance of diversity in the expression of faith.
Happy World Hijab Day Bangsamoro!
